Social media activism has turned a new corner. What was initially a rare and unheard of phenomenon is now a go-to formula guaranteed to garner attention and rally support for a cause.
Take the #MeToo movement. Tarana Burke, a civil rights activist, started the movement to gain awareness for the women experiencing sexual assault and abuse. The movement was ‘awakened’ in 2017 by the women who came forward accusing Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, and an expanding list of others, of sexual assault. People took to social media to use the hashtag to explain their own stories, using the platform as a tool to spread the word that women, and men, are not singular in their experience.
