Call me Caitlyn
Bruce Jenner is famously known for being a credible and successful Olympian. In current media, Jenner is better known for being the step father to Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian through marrying Kris Kardashian. Jenner would frequently feature on the hit E! television series ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians‘ along with his family. As of February 2018, Jenner became a grandparent to yet another child from his youngest child, Kylie.
In 2015, Bruce Jenner transitioned to become Caitlyn Jenner in an extremely documented public eye. Social media and television allowed anybody worldwide to follow his very personal transition.
It came as a shock to all within the LGBT+ community when former Olympian, Bruce Jenner, joined us in the community. Many believed Jenner’s transition to be a publicity stunt, rooted from ex-wife Kris Jenner (formerly Kardashian). This is based on the public opinion that the Jenner/ Kardashian clan orchestrate publicity moves frequently. The family as a whole base their careers on exploring their lives via social media and television so it is difficult for audiences to determine real news from fake. However, in this case, the rumours stemmed to be true.
Jenner made her debut as Caitlyn in Vanity Fair magazine, 2015. Vanity Fair is an extremely popular monthly magazine, distributed in the United States.
The Vanity Fair cover was shot by Annie Leibovitz. Of all the magazine covers that featured the former athlete, once lauded as the ‘world’s greatest athlete,’ the Leibovitz photograph will be the most meaningful. Looking directly at the camera, Jenner is finally herself for the first time publicly. Bruce gave way to Caitlyn. He gave way to she.

Secrets of My Life
“The surgery was a success, and I feel not only wonderful but liberated,” she writes in her first memoir ‘The Secrets of My Life’
The former Olympian explains that she is constantly asked if she’s had the surgery by fans. Jenner hopes that this will be the first and last time she’ll have to address it.
“So why even consider it? Because it’s just a penis. It has no special gifts or use for me,” writes Caitlyn. “I just want to have all the right parts, I am also tired of tucking the damn thing in all the time.”
“I am going to have an enthusiasm for life that I have not had in 39 years since the Olympics,” she adds. “Almost two thirds of my life.”
Caitlyn has previously had breast augmentation and facial feminisation surgery as part of her transition. Jenner has earned an impressive $4million advance for her tell-all book.
Khloé Kardashian was promoting her new show, Kocktails With Khloe. Howard Stern could not resist to ask about her famous family – mainly Caitlyn Jenner. Khloé claimed that Caitlyn profusely lied about her gender transition. Even to the point that she couldn’t keep her story together.
“People would think that we were lying … But no, we believed him,” she explained, adding that she first found out about Bruce Jenner’s plans to transition during an E! meeting.
“They mentioned Bruce had a television show about transitioning, and that’s the first we heard of it … We felt betrayed because more business people knew. I never want someone to feel like they have a one-up on our family,” she continued. “We’ve never turned our backs on each, so why would we now?”.
Kardashian added that she would try to talk to Caitlyn, but that she would shy away. “He would only want to talk to us on-camera,” Kardashian revealed. “I think for security he felt we couldn’t get upset on-camera or whatever.”
Interestingly, she even explained that the famous Vanity Fair cover was a shock.
“He did have private talks with us after,” she explained. “But he never said he was going to transition. He would just say his soul has always been a woman.” In fact, it was only the Diane Sawyer interview which really answered the questions they had.
“Bruce made it a point for all of us to watch it together, and that’s when it was the first time we heard a lot of things,” she recalled. “We didn’t even know about Diane Sawyer until it was taped and done. On that show is when we genuinely found out about transitioning.”
LGBT+ community members will understand and empathise that there is no correct way to come out. There is no rule book or guidance on how to please everyone whilst feeling comfortable yourself. Caitlyn Jenner has received many criticisms for how she presented herself as a woman to her family. With the sheer amount of transparency we as an audience have on Jenner/ Kardashian life; it is impossible for us to judge. This is because we are provided with the information they decide to show us. Transparency is much more opaque than some viewers originally judge.
Interestingly, Jenner did not stick with the ‘K’ theme of her family name. Rebelling, Jenner went with a ‘C’ spelling of Caitlyn.
We here at LGBT Celebrity take our hats off to Caitlyn Jenner. You go girl!
